May 12: Helmet Giveaway

As part of its mission to promote the prevention of head injuries, the Traumatic Brain Injury Resource Center will sponsor a youth bicycle helmet giveaway on Saturday, May 12 from 10 AMto 2 PM at the center.

Additional sponsors include:

  • Charles E. Boyk Personal Injury Lawyers
  • Wersell’s Bike & Ski Shop
  • MVM Moving and Storage
  • American Academy of Pediatrics, Ohio Chapter


In addition, two youth bicycles will be given aware (need not be present to win) and youth will have an opportunity to register for this summer’s Bikes for Kids program. Staff from Wersell’s will provide helmet fittings. Children must be present to receive a helmet. A total of 350 helmets will be given away on a first come, first serve basis.

Since the inception of the Put a Lid on It program, the Ohio Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics has given away over 20,000 helmets. The Academy notes that In Ohio only 10 – 20% of children ages 5 – 14 regularly wear helmets yet more than 70% in this age group regularly ride a bike. Helmet use could reduce heady injuries by 85% and severe brain injuries by 80%.
