Media stories of wounded veterans returning home with traumatic brain injuries as the result of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and high school, college and professional athletes suffering multiple concussions dominate our news. Yet, the leading cause of TBI is falls; and, while young adults incur TBI in the highest numbers, the greatest risk is to the very young and the elderly.
In Toledo, we estimate that 15 or more people suffer a head trauma every day. Of these, about four require at least 48 hours of hospitalization or die as a result of their injuries. While the existing data collection methods are limited, we estimate that between 12,000 and 17,500 TBI survivors with ongoing issues live in the Toledo area.
