Helmet Giveaway a Hit!

As part of its mission to promote the prevention of head injuries, the Traumatic Brain Injury Resource Center, partnering with other community leaders, hosted a children's bike helmet giveaway.

The event took place Saturday, May 12.  Additional sponsors included Charles E. Boyk Personal Injury Lawyers, Wersell’s Bike & Ski Shop, and MVM Moving and Storage. Over 750 parents and children attended the event despite the rain and approximately 250 kids received helmets after being fitted by volunteers from Wersell's.  One of the girls in attendance was recently injured after falling from her bike. She was not wearing a helmet, but fortunately she only suffered some scrapes and bruises.

The event was made possible with additional support from the Ohio Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics as part of its Put a Lid On It  awareness program for Bicycle Safety Month. Since the inception of the Put a Lid on It program, the Ohio Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics has given away over 20,000 helmets. The Academy notes that In Ohio only 10 – 20% of children ages 5 – 14 regularly wear helmets yet more than 70% in this age group regularly ride a bike. Helmet use could reduce heady injuries by 85% and severe brain injuries by 80%
